Integrating Access Technology into Mainstream Computing

Over the past decade we have seen a very significant growth in the personal use of computing. From ATM machines, to mobile telephony to personal computers, technology now plays an integral part in most peoples' lives. Nowhere is this more apparent than for computer users with disabilities. The emergence of cheaper speech synthesisers, and more affordable computers now means that those with visual impairment have equivalent, if not totally equal access with their peers. However what is not widely known is the opportunities afforded to mainstream computer users by the evolution in access technologies. This talk will introduce some access technologies for the blind/visually impaired computer user, and expand on their role for fully sighted computer users.
