Enabling Participation: Semantic Services Design, Deployment, and Valorization

Abstract
Semantic technologies, established over the past decade, have been successfully adopted by scientific communities of the Life Sciences, Astronomy, and Humanities researchers, as well as modern governments, media industry and the Web. Extension of the success of semantic technologies to important high impact industry segments and markets, such as telecommunications and energy management, is crucial to enable active participation, interoperation, and generation of new value.<p> I address an unresolved problem of designing, developing and putting in operation intelligent enablers for converged media, mobile, sensor-empowered environments, and social, context-based and information Internet services. While a large number of important data, information, knowledge and services of industrial environments are locked behind the so-called ?walled gardens?, these enablers are meant to be open to and accepted by a vast range of third party contributors, ranging from commercial companies to private end-users. Basing on the enablers, the contributors will provide and refine added-value services within communication, collaboration and consumption processes. Thus, the main aim and a measurable success criterion of this work is enablement of more efficient adding value participation.Bio
Dr. Anna Fensel is a Senior Researcher at FTW - Telecommunications Research Center Vienna and a Lecturer at STI Innsbruck, University of Innsbruck, Austria. Anna has been extensively involved in European and national projects related to Semantic technologies, e.g. as an overall coordinator (FFG project SESAME-S and SESAME), a local project manager (FP7 CA BIG, FP7 CA PRELIDA, FP7 STREP m:Ciudad, FP7 NoE PlanetData, AAL PeerAssist, FP6 IST IP SPICE, FP5 IST project Esperonto) as well as a technical contributor in other numerous projects. Earlier she worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Surrey, UK, and at DERI Innsbruck, University of Innsbruck, Austria. Anna has been a doctoral student in Informatics at the University of Innsbruck, where she has defended her PhD thesis ?An approach to ontology construction and its application to community portals? in 2006. Earlier, in 2003, she graduated in Mathematics and Computer Science from Novosibirsk State University, Russia. She has been a co-organizer or a Program Committee member of ca. 60 scientific events, a reviewer for numerous journals and a project proposals evaluator for European Commission. She is an author of 65 refereed publications in books, international journals, conference and workshop proceedings.Invited by Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Gabriele Kotsis
