Cyclomatic Complexity - the most overrated Software metric? - and related ideas

Abstract
In Software Engineering, McCabe's "cyclomatic complexity" is one of the best-known and probably also most often applied software metrics. It has been studied and also criticised a lot after its introduction in 1976. However, it seems that its basic principle for software testing - "basic path coverage" - has not been directly challenged from a theoretical viewpoint, and Prof. Sakkinen is trying to do that in his talk. In the course of his presentation, Prof. Sakkinen will also present a recent approach (new coverage criterion) for control flow-based testing, suggested by Ammann and Offutt, which in his opinion rests on a sounder basis. Finally, Prof. Sakkinen will suggest that control flow diagrams might be better if the roles of nodes and edges were exchanged. That idea, though offering benefits, is however not apparent in existing literature.Bio
Prof. Markku Sakkinen ist Emeritus Professor für Informatik der Universität Jyväskylä Finnland. Er graduierte an der Universität Jyväskylä zum Magister im Jahr 1971 und erhielt bereits im Jahr darauf das Lizenziat, mit Mathematik als Hauptfach und Informatik als wichtigstem Nebenfach. Anschließend war er als EDV-Experte an der Universität Jyväskylä ebenso wie in der Industrie tätig. Er promovierte im Jahr 1992 im Fachgebiet Informatik mit seiner Doktorarbeit "Inheritance and other main principles of C++ and other object-oriented languages". Sein Hauptforschungsgebiet ist bis heute die Objektorientierung in der Softwaretechnik zu dem er in einer Reihe von internationalen Journalen und Konferenzen publizierte. Bereits seit 1988 war er aktiv in den ECOOP-Konferenzen (European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming) involviert und war Hauptorganisator der ECOOP 1997 in Jyväskylä. Im Studienjahr 1995 - 1996 war er Gastprofessor an der Johannes Kepler Universität, danach an der Universtät von Jyväskylä Assistenzprofessor und später Professor der Informatik, mit Spezialgebiet "Programmierung und Softwaretechnik". Er emeritierte im Jahr 2011, ist aber immer noch in seinem Forschungsgebiet aktiv tätig.Invited by Univ.-Prof.in Dr.in Gabriele Anderst-Kotsis
